Coping with Job Loss

With the shaky state of the economy at present, there are a lot of people who have found themselves out of work. If you’ve lost your job recently, it may make you feel better to know that there are things you can do to cope with the loss of your job and to get back in the workforce as quickly as possible. Even though losing your job can be incredibly stressful, it may also be an opportunity to begin something new and exciting. During this time, having the right attitude can make all the difference in the world.

The following are some of the things you can do to get back on your feet after losing your job:

Talk about the situation with your spouse or partner. This is something which will have an impact on both of you, so it is important to work together to plan a strategy to get by until you’re working again. Look over your finances and figure out how long your savings can sustain you, what financial obligations you have coming up and come up with a plan to get through the tough times.

Talk to your former employer. You may not work for them anymore, but there are some things which you may need to discuss with them. For instance, find out of COBRA or any other insurance is available so that your family can still be insured while you look for a new position.

You should also ask if there is a severance package; if this is a possibility, make sure to find out as much as you can about it and make every dollar count.

Apply for state unemployment benefits. In most states you can apply for unemployment benefits online and begin receiving some much needed money while you look for work.

Update your resume and start your job search by posting it on job sites and printing copies to mail, fax or drop off in person. You should also look at job forums and classified ad sites like Craigslist regularly to find openings and apply directly with companies you’re interested in. The internet is a great tool for job hunters and can help you find out about opportunities which you might never have known about otherwise.

Stay positive. Look at the situation as an opportunity and give yourself positive affirmations and encourage your family and friends to think positively – this will be more help than you might think. A positive attitude can help you find a new job quickly; your enthusiasm and positivity will impress many employers, while a negative attitude will make it very difficult to land a new position.

Be honest with your children, if you have children. Tell your kids that things are going to be a little tight for a while and that everyone will need to cut back on expenses. Let them know that things will be back to normal soon and make sure not to scare them during this talk.

Don’t dismiss any of your options. Sometimes, something that looks like a negative really does turn out to be a blessing in disguise and when you lose your job, it could turn out to be one of the best things that’s ever happened to you. You may have been dissatisfied with your job but were afraid to leave it – but now that the decision is out of your hands, you now have a chance to try something new. You may want to explore options like relocating for a new job, working online, starting your own business or something else.

Times are tough, but there are always opportunities out there. If you don’t let yourself become discouraged and keep thinking positively throughout this time of transition, you may soon find yourself in a better position than you were to begin with!
